How to Kill Lawn Weeds for Weed Identification

Different Types of Lawn Weeds for Weed Identification

Every spring, lawn and garden enthusiasts everywhere are faced with the annoyance that is lawn weeds. The seasoned folks know to prevent grass weeds before it sprouts while the amateurs try desperately to get rid of common weeds that have already begun to take over their lawn. Many even spent countless hours just on weed identification.

Instead of wasting time on lawn weeds identification, those hours are better spent preventing the lawn weeds from growing in the first place. Even the best weed killer is not 100% effective. So your initial plan for weed control should always be weed prevention. The best way to do that is to spread a weed pre-emergent such as Corn Gluten on your lawn. Corn gluten is a natural by-product of cornstarch and corn syrup production which, when used as a fertilizer, inhibits weed germination (preventing the weed seed from forming roots and sprouting). Corn Gluten is called a pre-emergent because it’s only effective before the weed “emerges”. Once the weed sprouts, you’ll have to pull it out by the roots manually or use a weed killer.

Another way to prevent common weeds on your lawn is to have a lush, thick lawn. When your grass is nice, healthy and thick, the weeds cannot compete with it. Cutting your grass high also prevent different types of weeds from getting the sun it needs to grow. And without the necessary sun, water and nutrients, weeds cannot take hold. So how do you get a healthy lawn that’s lush and thick? By keeping the soil healthy with a proper fertilization, watering, and mowing regimen.

What If My Lawn Already Has Weeds? How Do I Kill the Weeds?

How to kill weeds? By using a weed killer, of course! One of the best selling weed killers for lawns is the Roundup Weed Killer. It works by contact or by getting absorbed into the weeds, killing it from the roots. Round Up Weed Killer also works on garden weeds. For those of you who do not like to chemically treat your lawn, there’s always the option of pulling out the weeds manually. But this can be a back-breaking task, and for a large lawn that’s overtaken by weeds, a better option would be to use an Organic Lawn Weed Killer (good for the environment and good for your back). Just keep in mind that if you do decide to use an herbicide, don’t use it around where your children or pets will come into contact with the herbicide.

And there you have it. Preventing lawn weeds from growing in your yard is simple. You just have to put in the work and not wait until the weeds have begun to sprout. It’s definitely cheaper and less frustrating in the long run.
