Question: My dog loves to urinate all over the yard. My lawn is starting to have brown, dead patches. How can I fix brown spots caused by my dog’s urine?
- Kevin S. (Los Angeles, CA)
Answer: The brown spots on your lawn are caused by the high concentration of nitrogen in the dog’s urine. The best thing to do is to saturate with water the spot where your dog just urinated. This will help dilute the urine and diminish its effect.
There are also products out there like K9 Yard Patch- Super Fast Grass Repair that will help repair damaged spots by organically neutralizing pet urine as well as conditions your soil. Of course, you’ll still need to put down some new seeds to fill in the bare spots (see Planting Grass Seed: Step-by-Step Instructiions).
To prevent future cases of urine burn spots, train your dog to only pee at certain places. If you want to keep your pet out of a particular area, a strategically-placed Motion-Activated Sprinkler can help.
Another preventive measure is to give your dog something like Nutri-Vet Green Grass Chewable Tablets which is a nutritional supplement that neutralizes potential for high pH urine that can damage grass.
