COMPREHENSIVE LAWN MOWER REVIEWS: BLACK & DECKER MM875 19″ Mulching ELECTRIC LAWN MOWER
It seems that more and more people are switching from their gasoline-guzzling, fume-irritating, maintenance-intensive, hand-numbing gas lawn mowers to the eco-friendly, noise-challenged, hassle-free electric lawn mowers. (Did you know that, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, gas mowers produce 5% of all air pollution in the U.S.?) Whether you’re a first-time electric mower buyer or a seasoned gas mower buyer who’s finally had enough, the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 amp Electric Mulching Mower with Rear Bag is a great choice.
The Black & Decker MM875 is the only lawn mower recommended by Consumer Reports in its corded electric push mower category. (see also: Consumer Reports Recommended Lawn Mowers). But don’t just take the unbiased and reliable Consumer Report’s word for it. Check out the 10 years and over 400 worth of customer reviews on Amazon.com of the Black & Decker MM875 averaging 4 out of 5 stars. This just goes to show you that cheap lawn mowers can also be quality push mowers. And the MM875 has really stood the test of time. If this isn’t the best lawn mower in its class, I don’t know what is. Now let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.
Ease of Assembly
The one thing I hate about getting new equipment is the putting together part. Something that looks simple can be a nightmare to assemble. Well, setting up the Black & Decker MM875 is as easy as can be. Getting the MM875 ready to go is just a matter of attaching the handle and the rear bag, plug in the electrical cord and power up. Done. No sweat.
Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Mower Features
The MM875 has a convenient lever that allows you to adjust the height of all four wheels at the same time with just one touch. The 8 height settings can be adjusted from 1-1/4″ to 3-1/2″. Built for mulching, the MM875 push mower comes with a mulching insert and discharge capabilities. The rear bag that collects the grass clippings is easily attached/detached. Here’s a good tip for you to maximize the use of the bag: As you mow with an empty bag, stop after a few minutes and remove the bag. Shake it around a bit so it settles to the back of the bag and re-attach it back to the mower. This will allow the bag to fill more evenly and all the way to capacity. The MM875 also has a hook near where the power cord plugs in to keep the cord from accidentally coming off.
Why Get a Corded Instead of a Cordless Electric Lawn Mower?
The battery of the cordless electric lawn mowers really adds to the weight of the push lawn mower making it more difficult to maneuver when you have uneven or sloping lawns. For example, the battery on the Black & Decker CM1936 Cordless Electric Lawn Mower weighs 28 lbs. How would you like to lug around an extra 28 lbs. while mowing? Didn’t think so. And for the truly dedicated eco-friendly people out there, the thought of potential harm to the environment caused by improper disposal of batteries (which contains heavy metals like mercury and lead) leads them to choose the corded models. Also, depending on how hard you run the battery, you’ll have to replace the battery after a few years.
And having to mow with a 100 feet of extension cord to deal with is really not that bad IF you know how to stay out of the cords way. The key is to start mowing nearest to the electrical outlet and where the bulk of the cord is collected, and mow further and further away with each pass.
Performance of the Black & Decker MM875
For those who are used to gas push mowers, you might feel a distinct difference in power. However, don’t let it fool you. For normal lawn mowing, the Black & Decker MM875 performs just as well. And you won’t have to put up with the heavy vibration and noise of the gas engine chugging away. If you wait until the grass is very long and overgrown, of course you’ll have a harder time with an electric mower. The MM875 has a 19-inch cutting swath and for use in mowing a lawn that’s up to 1/4 of an acre in size. The cutting swath is a little smaller than its gas counterparts, but it just means it’ll take you a bit longer to mow. I don’t know about you, but I sure could use any extra exercise I can get. And the customers have been very happy with MM875’s mulching performance.
Maintaining the Black & Decker MM875 Electric Lawn Mower
Trading in your gas push mower for an electric one means easier maintenance. No more tune-ups and replacing oil, filters and spark plugs. All you gotta do is keep the blade sharp/clean and the undercarriage free of buildup. To keep the blade sharp, you can either buy a lawn mower blade sharpener or for a little bit more money just buy the Black & Decker 19-Inch Lawn Mower Replacement Blade.
To keep the underside of the deck free of grass clipping buildup and make the cleaning much easier, here’s a neat little trick: coat the underside of your push lawn mower with non-stick cooking spray. Ideally, you should apply the first coating before you use your brand new lawn mower for the first time. After that, just spray before each mow and cleaning the undercarriage will be a breeze. The debris should come right off. Be sure to let the spray set in for a few minutes though before you start mowing. Another suggestion to help keep your MM875’s motor running smoothly is to take off the motor cover and clean it at the end of every mowing season.
Complaints about the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Mower
Customers have complained that the discharge tunnel to the rear bag is a bit on the small side. What this means is that if you’re cutting wet or damp grass, the clippings can build up easily and block the path. The way to solve this is to cut your lawn when it’s nice and dry. It’ll make cleaning the undercarriage easier, too, since dry clippings won’t accumulate as much.
People have also mentioned that the rear bag could be better designed to include a handle to make it easier to grasp when taking it on and off the mower. Others complained about not being able to fill the bag to capacity. If you follow the little tip above, you’ll be able to bag more grass clippings. Depending on the size of the job, you might need to empty the bag a couple of times.
Overall, the Black & Decker MM875 is a good buy. It comes with a standard 2-year warranty and is recommended by Consumer Reports. And if that’s not enough, check out the 400+ customer reviews on Amazon.com giving it an average of 4 out of 5 stars. At $227.99, the price is a bargain. Cheap lawn mowers can be quality lawn mowers, and Black & Decker’s MM875 is the perfect example.
And if you’re looking to save a little bit of money (about 10 bucks), you can check out the Black & Decker MM1800 18-Inch Corded Electric Lawn Mower. The key differences between the MM1800 and the MM875 are:
- MM1800 has a smaller cutting swath (18 inches)
– MM1800 is 6 lbs. lighter
– All four wheels on the MM1800 are 7″, whereas the MM875 has 7″ front wheels and 8″ rear wheels (for better maneuverability)
And Don’t Forget These!
