TSI's Sumatran tigers are very well cared for. TSI is an active player in a collaborative international network of enlightened zoological institutions that seek to translate the educational and scientific merits of modern zoos into direct benefits for wild animals, and in particular, endangered species. TSI and their partners care for and breed healthy Sumatran tigers as part of a global species survival plan that is overseen by the World Conservation Union's (IUCN) Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG). These zoo animals may one-day offer one of the most valuable conservation solutions, helping us ensure the long-term survival of the wild Sumatran tiger. Though we are still a long way from knowing precisely how this will be done, one of the options before us is the interbreeding of captive and wild populations, using methods such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization. The captive animals would presumably come from healthy, well-managed breeding stock with a minimum inbreeding coefficient; animals that carry as many of the genes that typify the Sumatran subspecies. This conceptual method has never been tested but is potentially an extremely valuable "Genetic Insurance Policy".

TSI is an active partner in numerous endangered wildlife conservation initiatives, such as the breeding of Sumatran rhinos, Komodo dragons, Javan hawk eagles, orangutans, Bali starlings and several other Indonesian endangered species. TSI's extensive facilities are located in a beautiful, lush mountain setting an hour and a half south of Jakarta, where one can observe over two thousand animals representing more than three hundred species. The center is open to the public, and comfortable, modern accommodation is close by. We encourage everyone who has the opportunity to travel to Indonesia to visit Taman Safari and the Sumatran Tiger Conservation Breeding Center. As an added bonus, it is one of the best places in the world to photograph tigers in a dramatic jungle setting. Several leading wildlife photographers and television documentary filmmakers, such as the BBC and Discovery Channel, have photographed and filmed tigers here. Many of the photos in this site were also taken there. If you are fortunate enough to visit TSI and to see a litter of rare Sumatran tiger cubs up-close, it is a truly enriching experience.
